Our History :

The YouReach Alcanza!

YouReach+ has been based on and inspired by the success of the YouReach Alcanza! Program.  It seeks to increase its impact by reaching out to Hispanic children and youth in different underprivileged communities, and by helping support and strengthen the work of non-profit organizations with a shared mission.

Initially YouReach was launched with a Campamento de Enriquecimiento (Enrichment Camp) in July 2010 serving over 25 children, and continued on with year-round weekly Writing and Tutoring sessions during academic years 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13 school years, along with Enrichment Camps in the summers of 2010, 2011, and 2012. All of our programs have always been completely free of charge to the families.

The original YouReach program had four main components:

1.  A writing program to help children improve their writing skills and gain confidence in their abilities by publishing their work in YouReach’s newspaper page.

2.  A mentoring program where children met with local Latino role models through speaker presentations and field trips, speakers included Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

3.  A tutoring component to help the children with their school courses.

4.  The Admissions Initiative to help students prepare for standardized testing, and to build awareness of educational and financial opportunities.

Dozens of volunteers from local Catholic high schools tutored YouReach's students every week throughout the academic year.  College students from Georgetown University mentored the children through the Admissions Initiative. The program was based at the beautiful Our Lady Queen of the Americas.  The parish’s staff, volunteers, families and children embraced this program, which run successfully for three years.  Because Our Lady of the Americas is the main Spanish parish in the entire Washington DC area, families attending the program came from different locations including counties in Maryland and Virginia.

In an effort to expand its impact, YouReach Alcanza!  changed its approach and transitioned from running the program in one location to helping other non-profit organizations run education programs in different communities.   And so YouReach Alcanza! ceased to exist as a 501(c)(3) and YouReach+ was born as a non-operating, non-profit, grant making organization in January of 2014.
